Mission Visioning; A Few Thoughts, Kim Labinger

There is a saying that “One generation plants the
trees; another gets the shade.” It is with a grateful heart
that I join all of you in the process of envisioning the
future of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Studio
City. This is an exciting time to be a participant in
this church community. Like you, I have taken the
opportunity to reflect on the importance of the many
individuals and programs that have made this the place
that kept drawing our family back week after week. We
were, to be sure, the happy recipients of the shade: the
sanctuary and the services prepared by the many hard-
working, caring individuals who were here when we first
walked in the door.
Having now participated in the recent church-wide,
small group conversations that led to the drafting of a
new Mission Statement and a new Vision Statement, I
have a renewed appreciation for the responsibility we
carry of working to preserve that which has provided
the shade and the sustenance we find so vital to our
participation here, as well as the importance of helping
to identify areas where new seeds, great and small,
might be planted and nurtured – not only for ourselves,
but for the next person who may find our door.
